Make your audience targeted at families, and host it on the weekend, in nice weather. Something they can all participate in. If they're having fun, and know what the cause is, they are likely to support you. You could incorporate sport into the fundraiser and perhaps do a "fun-run"...and have a kids section where they can win some prizes (you can grab heaps of boys and girls toys from the $2 shop) and do some "lucky dips" for the kids.
